Deforestation & Endangered Animals

Deforestation & Endangered Animals The book Running Wild is about a Boy in the Wild with an Elephant and it has shown me many problems in the forests like deforestation for starters, deforestation is killing our animals because we are cutting down trees to use them for something we want when the animals actually need the trees to survive in the forest. Now we only have around 7,500 Sumatran Orangutans and that is people just being greedy, taking the trees that they live in and then it kills the animals too. Did you know that every minute a forest the size of 20 football fields is cut down. This is horrific. Forests cover 30% of the earth's land and within 100 years rainforests could be completely wiped out. If you think about that is too quick, do you want you, your children and grandchildren to grow up with a healthy planet or not? If we stop Deforestation it will stop a lot of flooding because the trees soak up all of the water and it slows down the water rushing down the hills and mountains. We are cutting around 50 million trees a year and ruining lots of habitats. This is very serious, think about it, this is our own greed, we are cutting down palm trees to make our food tastier. There are other ways and maybe you could think about using them. In the past 25 years forests have shrunk by 502’000 square miles and this is terrifying. 20% of Greenhouse gas emissions are from Deforestation and so that is also making climate change. Sumatran Elephants, Sumatran Tigers, Sumatran Orangutans and Sumatran Rhinos are all going extinct and we need to do something about this. In 1900 we used to have around 100,000 Sumatran Tigers and now we only have 400-500 Sumatran Tigers in the wild. We only have around 2400-2800 Sumatran Elephants and this is terrible, there are around 7500 Orangutans left in the wild. Sumatran Orangutans will be extinct in around 10 years unless everybody takes action and trys to look after the forests. With people poaching and so much habitat loss we are down to just 80 Sumatran Rhinos, we have to do something about this! It is just outrageous! More than 99% of the 4 billion species that have evolved on earth are gone. At least 900 species have gone extinct in 4 centuries. Scientists estimate that around 150-200 species of plants, birds and mammals get extinct every 24 hours. In conclusion we need to do something about this if you want to help the earth go out and plant some trees, try and buy foods that don’t have palm oil in them, try and buy recycled things and recycle all of your things that can be recycled. There is so much more you can do! One little thing actually does a lot so just do your little bit and then tell as many people as you can like your friends and your family. Every little thing counts.

Oona's Story

       🌿 Oona’s Story 🌿

It was coming. I knew it was but I knew I couldn't tell him, so I ran and kept running until my toes began to hurt. I needed to get him out of here safely, but how? As we were running through the jungle this boy kept slapping me and telling me something but how was I, an elephant, supposed to know what he wanted? So I went faster.

As we were running through the jungle there were leaves everywhere, I decided to grab a few and eat them on the journey. It was gonna be a long one I knew that for sure, As we came up to a big hill I slowed down to a speedy trot. There was that boy looking behind us, he let out a big gasp and I wondered why.

He said something but I didn’t know what he said. I knew that he had said something and It sounded like waves and I knew what waves meant and as soon as he said waves, I took off at a speed that was very fast. I didn’t even know I could go that fast.

There was that boy sitting on me just looking sad, so I tried to cheer him up by grabbing some leaves and munching them up as slowly as I could.I looked behind me and saw the boy and he was laughing very hard. He looked hungry, at least I thought he did so I decided to get him some food.

I picked the nicest orange coconut that I could find and then wrapped it in my trunk and lifted my trunk so it was right in front of the boy. He at once lifted his head, grabbed the food and gave me a big hug. After that every time I passed a coconut tree I gave him one.

That night we slept on the floor. He grabbed heaps of leaves and put them on the ground so the leeches didn’t get him. The next day he was walking down the river and I was scared that he was going to leave me here. I needed him and he needed me, so I chased after him and then he just stood there and hugged me. I think I had just changed his mind!

Alone on a Wide Wide Sea End

I think what made this story so good and effective was that so many things happened like being with Aunty Megs made the story really good and happy and Allie being with the albatross made her happy so it made the reader happy as well. In the book they used a historical event because Arturs favourite poem  was The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

I really enjoyed the parts with Aunty Megs in it because she made Marty and Arthur very happy and they had a great time with Aunty Megs. I did love Henry too, he was so cute he would always steal their socks and lie on their laps when they were feeding him.

Marty and Arthur had a special relationship because they went through a lot together like being at Piggy Bacon’s House but no matter how terribly Piggy Bacon treated them they always looked after each other and made each other happy.

After Marty died it seemed like everybody else did like Aunty Megs, Big Black Jack and Barnaby and then he got kicked out of the Ark this shows you how strong Arthur was to continue with his life.

I liked how the story always had some sort of connection like the albatross and the key. The key was always with Arthur and Allie brought it on her journey as well. And the Albatross was with Arthur at the start of the book, it was one of his first memories and then Allie had an albatross follow her for most of the journey.

In the end I was very surprised I did not think that they would find Kitty because I thought she would’ve moved away or died. I thought at the start of reading this book that the key unlocked a weapon to kill Piggy Bacon with.

Mahmoud and the End

Mahmoud and the End

Mahmoud was happy, was Ruthie really going to help him find his baby sister?! He really hoped that she would. Mahmoud went to school and made lots of friends that were refugees but most of them weren’t. But most importantly he had a great friendship with another refugee from Syria, his name was Liam. He had brown hair with hazel eyes quite similar to Mahmoud. Liam had a little brother as well and his name was Elijah. Mahmoud and Liam would go home each night and write letters to everyone in the town saying: Have you seen a little girl named Hana? She has Blonde\Brown hair with blue eyes and is now probably about 4 years old.

The next day at school Mahmoud and Liam were planning their bike ride down to the beach. They thought that they might stop at the ice cream parlour. For Mahmoud and Liam this was their usual meet up spot because they both loved ice cream, Mahmoud loved hokey pokey and Liam loved berry sorbet. It was already the end of the day, so Mahmoud and Liam were getting excited.

They rode their bikes down the red paved road and then 5 minutes later they arrived at the beach. People were everywhere! There sitting on the golden sand beach they saw a family with a little girl making a sandcastle, there was also a little boy writing his name. “WAIT A SECOND, who is that little girl!” Mahmoud said, looking at the girl building the sandcastle. He then went over and sat down next to her. They started playing in the sand and after a good look at the little girl he soon realised who she was! ”HANA! “ he yelled, after that he went up to Hana’s guardians and said “Excuse me, are you refugees and have you been given this little girl when you were escaping?” The man and woman said “Yes! We had been given her when a family was escaping and we have been trying to find them since”.

“YES! That was my family, this is my sister Hana.” said Mahmoud. The man and woman introduced themselves, they were called Ivy & Benjamin. Ivy and Benjamin said “It was amazing to have her, if our James was parted from us, I could not bear it. As much as we would love to keep her, it is better to be with her real family, so here you go you can take her”. Ivy said as she was crying her eyes out. “She was a real pleasure to have under our roof and we hope we took great care of her for you” said them both.

“Oh thank you, thank you!” Mahmoud hugged them and they hugged him back. Mahmoud grabbed Hana and put her on the bike with him. Hana was looking at him confused then after a few seconds, she smiled and realized who he was. “You haven’t forgotten me.” Mahmoud said softly. He started riding it very slowly he didn’t want anything to happen to her after what she had been through. Mahmoud and Liam rode back to Mahmoud’s house and he showed everyone who he had found. They hugged him so tight and well, Ruthie she was standing at the top of the stairs smiling and Mahmoud smiled back.

Letter \ Think and Respond \ Emotive Language

This term we have been learning about refugees this is my Letter at the top my Think and Respond in the middle and My Emotive language at the bottom.

Dear Family, While reading the Refugee book I have noticed that a lot of people are having to flee their country. They should be allowed to stay in their country no one owns it. They are fleeing their country because it is not safe or someone is trying to kill them. They come from lots of country's the most refugees live in Turkey nearly 3.7 million people have escaped to turkey, That is just too many people they should be allowed to stay with the people they love and the country or place they love, everybody deserves to be happy. And what can we do to help? Well we can support and raise money for the refugee people, that way it would help them start a new life and get the things they need. And we should help because would you like to have to flee your own country and go to a new country, not knowing anything about it, it would be terrible wouldn’t it? We have the salvation army and second-hand stores that they can go to and they can get all sorts of stuff. Refugees can also help us because they can tell us to be happy and grateful for what we have because we have amazing lives and they would be very inspiring.

Refugee Writing

This term we have been reading the book refugee this is one of the tasks that we had to do. Here is my writing hope you enjoy :)

Zofia stared at the dark night sky and wondered “Will I ever be safe”. Since Zofia was only 11 years old and didn’t have any parents because they died trying to escape some bombing. Luckily Zofia was out in the paddock feeding her dapple-grey arabian named Mystic, when the bombs fell.

Zofia had gotten injured but not too bad. She had a little bed on the raft, she had made on her own, heading out to New Zealand and safety. She had some food to keep her going but once she got to New Zealand she would get more food. Zofia had some money from her parents, luckily it was NZ money.

Zofia’s Dad had taught her how to drive a boat so if this ever happened she was ready for anything. Zofia could see a light far away and thought what is that? It got a little bit closer, close enough for her to see that it was the Nazi’s, they were following her. She tried to sail in a different direction but they just kept following. Zofia was scared she had never ever been this scared before. She went into the back of the boat and hid behind barrels which she had stored all of her stuff in and the Nazi’s went up to the boat.

“There is nobody in this boat should we take it or leave” said a Nazi “Just leave it we are here for the people not boats” Said another Nazi. Zofia was finally safe. She was going to be free and safe! No one could ever hurt her! She didn’t realise, but since she was hiding behind the barrel she hadn’t realized the boat had drifted off course. Zofia had been travelling for a couple of months now, she could see a colorful island in the distance, so she sailed over there towards the island. There was a big sign that said Wellington so she jumped off the boat and tied it to a giant rock. She saw a man so she sold the boat to him for 1000 dollars. There was a road and on the other side she had heard a young couple talking and laughing in Polish so then she approached them and discovered that they had fled Poland to escape from Nazis too.

She was so relieved to have found two people who had escaped Poland just like her. They took her home with them. They lived in the countryside with a little white cottage and a grey cat named Polly which she thought was nice because they named Polly after Poland.

Lena & Alexander were working at the city bank. She was convinced if they could start a new life and be happy that meant so could she. Zofia had got a job at the local stables, she had made even more friends and people were inspired by Zofia. She was amazing because of what terrible things she had got through.

And although she would never forget her family, Mystic and Poland and everything she went through, it just felt great to be in a country where she was safe and where the Nazis could not reach her. Zofia was happy with her new life she could see it was going to be much brighter, especially with her new friends by her side.

All About Me

This week we have been doing activities around what we like. The first one I did was Secret who am I? which was a little bit hard because you had to make it so that it wasn't that easy to guess.

This is my wanted poster. Me and Libbie made
this poster it was so fun we tried to make it look old fashioned with the rust on the sides.

This is my artwork which is about what I like doing. It was really fun and simple to make these. The 'Things that I like doing' one was easy because I knew exactly what I wanted to put on it.

Waitangi Day 2021

This year I learnt about the Treaty of Waitangi

The Maori and the English had a treaty to see who would get the land but some of the Maori chiefs didn't want to sign it and others didn't even see it. Some of the translating went wrong and so the words in Maori weren't correct.
